Rushden shopkeeper foils robbers with mop

A Premier shop in Northamptonshire was targeted by 3 thieves weilding crow bars on Friday 20 January 2012.

The shopkeeper, Dinesh Gorania, was cleaning up with his son when the 3 men entered his shop.

Mr Gorania used the mop he was holding to hit at the door to prevent the thieves from entering. The thieves left with nothing but did smash the shop window and the windows of Mr Gorania's and his sons cars, which were parked outside. No one was injured.

Military Wives' performance interrupted by armed jewel raid on Oxford Street

The Leslie Davis jewellers on Oxford Street, London was targeted by armed raiders in what is termed a 'smash and grab'.

Four men used hammers to smash the shop windows at about 10am. They are thought to have made off with various jewellery including rolex watches.

The Military Wives' were performing their single at the time, with choir conductor Gareth Malone and TV star Chris Evans outside the HMV store, which is located across the road from where the raid took place.

Securitas raid: Devon man must pay back raid-link cash

£1m was found in the boot of Ian Bowrem, which was part of that which was stolen during the Securitas robbery in Tonbridge, Kent.

Bowrem has been jailed for 3 years and 9 months "for concealing criminal property" as £380,000 of the money was traced to money stolen from Securitas.

He has also been ordered to "pay back assets held to the value of about "£1.1m".

Police figures show 4% fall in crime

Police figures have shown that crime between the years of 2010 to 2011 has fallen by 4%.

However, robberies and thefts were up by 3% and 5% respectively, which Association of Cheif Police Officers (ACPO) have said is "concerning".

ACPO have said they believe this increase in robberies is being "driven by thieves stealing mobile phones", which are in demand due to their value on the black market.

'I'm going to kill you': Stabbed burgler 'held knife to homeowner's throat'

A homeowner stabbed a burgler to death in the Cheshire area.

Two armed men entered Vincent Cooke's house with the intent to steal but when Mr Cooke's family arrived back at the house, he fatally stabbed one of the burglars, Raymond Jacob, who had a history of crime.

Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has said of the incident that "the law is very clear: you have every right to defend yourself, your home, your property, your family". The police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Have-a-go hero will not face prosecution for robber death

A 72-year-old florist has been told he will not face charges over the stabbing of a robber on his premises.

Cecil Coley, was playing dominoes in his shop with a friend after it had closed when they were confronted by four armed men.

One of the robbers, Gary Mullings, was stabbed to death following a struggle but it was ruled that "Mr Coley was acting in self-defence and will not stand trial".

Security guard shot in attempted robbery at Tesco store

A Tesco Express store in Nottinghamshire has been the target of a robbery, where a security guard was shot.

The three robbers attempted to steal from a G4S security van, when the security guard was filling up the cash machines outside the store.

The police are appealing for information about the robbery where the guard was shot in the leg.

Woman, 82, thwarts robbers at jewellers by attacking men with walking stick

A woman, 82, prevented the robbery of jewellery store in Essex by using her walking stick.

There were three robbers who were armed with baseball bats and sledgehammers.

The robbers left empty-handed and the woman was taken to hospital as a precaution as she was hit on the head during the attack.

Hero British fire-fighter, 28, died saving his brother from holiday robbers

Two brothers, Tom Ossel, 28 and Jack Ossel, 21, were holidaying in Venezuela when the hotel they were staying in was attacked by armed robbers.

The brothers tried to stop the robbers by throwing furniture at them but Tom Ossel was fatally shot, whilst Jack was stabbed.

The brothers were visiting Venezuela's Isla Margarita, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world, two people on average are murdered every hour.

Right to self-defence in homes to be ‘much clearer’

There are plans to clarify the self-defence law in England as there has been confusion over what it means.

Someone who knifes a burgler in their own home will not have committed a criminal offence, according to Justice Secretary Ken Clarke.

The law states that homeowners can use "reasonable force" to protect themselves and they will not have committed a crime in doing so. The government wants to place this law into statute law.

Cheryl Cole’s big brother gets six years for post office robbery plot

Andrew Tweedy, 30, Cheryl Cole's brother, has been jailed after planning and carring out an armed robbery on a post office where £2,000 was stolen.

There were four men involved in the robbery in Newcastle upon Tyne, where a machete and imitation handgun were used.

Tweedy hid the items used in the robbery in his loft, which were found when police raided his home. He has a history of crimes, which began when he was 13.
